About the Batchelder Medal
The Batchelder Award has been presented annually since 1969. Named after a former Executive Director of the Association for Library Service to Children, the Batchelder is a citation awarded to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States.
The winner and honor books are announced at the Midwinter Meeting of the American Library Association (ALA). This meeting usually occurs in January. The award is presented at ALA's Annual Conference which usually occurs in June.
The winner and honor books are named by the Batchelder Award Committee, a group that consists of five members of the Association for Library Services to Children a division of ALA.
