Comedian, carpa performer, campesino, folk hero, humanitarian, el pelado, the underdog. His name became a household word synonymous for funny, the Mexican Groucho Marx and Charlie Chaplin dubbed him “the greatest comic of all time”.  He was the King of colloquialism and subversive humor. His fame as a social satirist led him to become a union organizer and a philanthropist who had a distinctive cultural impact on Mexican society. His name even became part of the Spanish dictionary by the Royal Spanish Academy in 1992. This legendary performer was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award and a Golden Globe; he also earned his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and hand prints at the Paseo de las Luminarias. Artists Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo paid tribute and created portraits of him. His name and his memory continue to live on in the hearts of comic movie lovers.
