Bryan Collier’s unique art style combines watercolor and collage to create a rich, powerful effect. He cemented his style in elementary school, being drawn to collage because of the relationships it forms between different materials. Collier became deeply involved in community arts projects in Harlem. For many years, he directed the Harlem Horizon Studio, an organization which supports artists, until he became a rising star in the children’s book market with his first book, Uptown. He still lives in Harlem, where he takes time out from illustrating to volunteer at the Harlem Horizon Studio. He considers it his responsibility to encourage the artistic talents of young people in his neighborhood.
