Floyd Cooper

Floyd Cooper was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He worked in advertising and for a greeting card company before becoming a successful illustrator of children’s books. Cooper’s unique style of painting is called “oil wash on board.” He paints a picture, then uses an eraser to remove the paint, leaving a soft, pastel-like image behind as the final illustration. Cooper’s success and painting style have inspired a new generation of African American illustrators like Sean Qualls and Shane Evans, who have looked up to him as a role model.
