Jerry Pinkney was born in Philadelphia in 1939. At the age of four he began drawing. He had dyslexia and struggled in school, but his artistic talent became a source of pride for him. He was encouraged by many people in his life to pursue an art career. Pinkney flourished as a commercial artist, but his passion was illustration. He created the Jerry Pinkney Studio where he focused on illustrating children’s books. He works in pen and watercolor, creating delicately layered, realistic paintings full of feeling. His wife, Gloria Jean, their sons, and daughters-in-law are all children’s book authors or illustrators, proving that the Pinkney name can be found all over the library!
