Teen Services Web

A professional development guide for Teen Librarians, Teen Liaisons, and anyone else fortunate enough to work with Teens in the Library.

Director's Report

When writing your portion of the Director’s Report for your location, you should have one paragraph dedicated to Teen Services. Key considerations include:

  • Be sure that your paragraph includes the core message of teen participation and teen ownership.
    • “Teens planned and implemented…”
    • “Teens’ participation in the planning and implementation…”
  • Concentrate on the BASICS, the WHAT, and the BENEFIT
    • BASICS: Pretend reader doesn’t know anything about what you do at your location; let the reader know what your location offers to teens.
    • WHAT: Don’t get bogged down in details; this is not about clever program ideas, it’s about the core message: teen involvement.
    • BENEFIT: this is the big “why” of your paragraph; relate it to the core message. Include developmental needs language:
      • Meaningful participation
      • Competence and achievement
      • Creative expression
      • Leadership
      • Decision making
      • Self definition
      • Physical activity
      • Positive social interaction
