Over the past 20 years, Latino illustrators have made a powerful impact in the world of children's literature. Using a wide variety of styles and media, these artists have portrayed life's struggles and joys with images imbued with affection, grace, strength, and humor. Their work has helped forge a much needed connection with young readers, especially with those of Latino background. Many of these illustrators have been awarded the Pura Belpre Award, which honors "Latina/Latino writers and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth." It is hoped that this guide will be an inviting introduction to these talented artists and their work.
