A letter to the quinceañera

Querida Quinceañera,

A long time ago, Aztec parents would celebrate a daughter’s 15th birthday with a special ceremony.  The ceremony served to acknowledge that their daughter was now a young lady and no longer a little girl. The Aztec quinceañera would be equipped with adult survival skills such as cooking and weaving. This meant that she was now prepared to maintain a home and have a family of her own.

If you are planning on celebrating your quinceañera, you and your family are embarking on the same journey as those ancient Aztecs. You will probably not have to learn how to weave, but your parents may soon allow you different privileges. You may be allowed to stay out a little later, wear make-up, or maybe have a boyfriend. All of these are indications that your family acknowledges that you are growing up and are now capable of taking on new responsibilities.

Your quince celebration is a unique reflection of who you are and where you come from.  Your family may spend years preparing for the time when they can gather all your family together, in a church or some other meaningful place, to give thanks that you are a special and significant part of their lives.  Your aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters and friends will take time and care to you help plan your special day. They may help you find a dance hall, open their home to invited guests, select a great photographer, or accompany you as you go out to find the perfect dress. There will be many details, discussions, and decisions to be made to make sure that your quinceañera is a memorable one.

As you begin to plan your celebration, take a moment to reflect on the beautiful traditions that cultivated your world. Remember that you come from a rich and ancient history, one built on struggle, perseverance and triumph.  Be aware that your personal history is shaped by ancient rites, rituals and beliefs. Those rites, rituals, and beliefs will continue to influence and shape your world far into the future. We ask that you consider your life as an adult member of your community. How will your life impact the lives of quinceañeras yet to come?

Happy 15th birthday, Querida Quinceañera.  We wish you a long and rewarding life.
