Zines provide a way for anyone to express themselves and to share ideas. They demonstrate self-publishing at the most accessible level, introducing voices that may not have access to traditional publishing channels. SAPL’s zine collection is available for public use at Central Library and showcases materials written by, about and for our community. A zine (pronounced ZEEN-like magazine) is an independently published booklet.
SAPL's non-circulation zine collection is located on Central Library's Second Floor, in the Marie Schwartz Art Resource Center. Zines may not currently be checked out, but they may be viewed during your visit at SAPL.
The SAPL Zine Collection is a non-circulating selection that is stationed at the Central Library in the Marie Swartz Art Resource Center. This location is a fitting home to the collection since zines have become a true art form within itself.
The individual collection pieces are kept in plastic sleeves, in order to help preserve our inventory. Some zines may come with added keepsakes which will be kept with the zine but packaged in within the zine for public viewing. We encourage patrons to help preserve zine keepsakes so all visitors can enjoy these unique pieces of art. If keepsakes are taken SAPL is not able to replace them, due to scarcity of availability of most zines.
Note: Whenever possible a secondary copy of zines in the SAPL Zine Collection will be kept in Texana for archival purposes.
How will patrons access the Collection?
As a non-circulating collection, patrons will be able to access any zine from the Collection for reading or browsing. Any and all patrons are welcome to view the zines. Although, be aware that some content may not be suitable for children.
