What is it like to hide for extended periods of time – only to lose most of your family?
Hear the firsthand account of isolation experienced during the Holocaust from survivor
Evi Blaikie. Ms. Blaikie was born in Paris, smuggled to Hungary at the outbreak of
World War II, went into hiding in Hungary with her mother for a year, was liberated, and
then returned to France where she was placed in an orphanage. Learn how
Ms. Blaikie overcame all the challenges in her life and continues to advocate for tolerance
so that an atrocity like the Holocaust never occurs again.

Holocaust Learn and Remember 2021 Online Exhibit: ISOLATION

From 1933 to 1945, those deemed inferior or unwanted by Hitler and the Nazi party faced many forms of isolation. Through the use of propaganda and censorship, those targeted were slowly isolated from society. These groups saw their civil rights gradually taken away and eventually disenfranchised, losing the protections afforded by citizenship. Without these protections the Nazis were able to begin physically segregating these groups from society with the introduction of ghettos, and later killing centers. For survivors of Hitler’s 12-year regime, the long-term effects of isolation continue to affect them decades after the Holocaust.

HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE WALK

As a part of Holocaust Learn and Remember this year, we invite you to visit Semmes Branch Library to view a Holocaust Remembrance Walk. This Walk features images and text from this year’s online Holocaust Learn and Remember Exhibit. As you view the images and read the text, we hope that you learn more about the trauma, isolation, and discrimination that victims of the Holocaust experienced. The Holocaust Remembrance Walk will be available at Semmes Branch Library (15060 Judson Rd, 78247) through January 31st.
Please practice social distancing as you share the grounds with other visitors.
