Brush & Verse: Duo Book Celebration of Indigenous Picture Books

Native American Heritage Month was celebrated with local creators and long-time collaborators Adriana M. Garcia and Xelena González as they shared their newest picture books rooted in Indigenous cultures and wisdom. Garcia illustrated For a Girl Becoming by U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, while González authored Of the Sun: A Poem for the Land's First Peoples with artwork by Anishinaabe artist Emily Kewageshig. Together, through storytelling, poetry, and art, Indigenous creativity and customs across Turtle Island and within Latinx communities was celebrated in this program that was for all ages.

(TSIK+RI) Ojo De Dios

In honor of Native Indigenous Heritage Month, this special presentation focused on Indigenous yarn art by the Wixárika (Huichol) tribe. This was a special demonstration of the (TSIK+RI) aka Ojo de Dios, where participants learned how to create their own yarn art, the cosmology behind each color, and what it meant to be Wixárika on Turtle Island.
