The Friends of the San Antonio Public Library operates the BookCellar, a used book store in the basement of the Central Library, thus the name "BookCellar." Book sales are the main source of income for the Friends, and the profits are donated to support San Antonio Public Library activities and materials such as the Summer Reading Program. The BookCellar is managed by a salaried employee of the Friends and staffed by volunteers from Friends of the San Antonio Public Library.
For prices on items check below, however some uniquely valuable books, like art books, are priced a little higher (usually from $2.00 to $5.00). However, the BookCellar often has clearance sales on books. For example, fiction books might sell at two or three for a dollar. No other used bookstore in San Antonio sells books this cheaply.
The selection at the BookCellar includes fiction, non-fiction, reference books, CDs, videos and audio tapes. There are also some Spanish and foreign language books.
By city ordinance all books withdrawn from the San Antonio Public Library may be sold by the BookCellar. With these books and others donated by individuals and organizations, the BookCellar is able to sell books to the public at very low prices.
If you know a high school student or organization, such as the National Honor Society, seeking community service credits, please tell them the BookCellar welcomes hard-working teenage volunteers.
