Activating Your Card

When you're ready to activate your card, visit any San Antonio Public Library location with a valid photo ID and proof of address. Our friendly staff will activate your new limited-edition library card and answer any questions you have about your new account.

Library cards for kids and teens: Bexar County residents under 18 can also register for a card by presenting a photo ID or proof of address. Younger children without these documents can sign up when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with valid photo ID and proof of address.


Is what I received a real library card?

Yes, if you received a library card featuring the phrase "Someone who ❤️s me got me this San Antonio Public Library card" then you are holding a real library card waiting to be activated. Lucky you! Make your way to any SAPL location to activate it today.

Can I activate my card if I don't live in Bexar County?

San Antonio Public Library cards are free for residents of Bexar County, but there are options for people who live outside the county:

  • Residents of other counties in Texas may be eligible to participate in the TexShare program. If your home library participates in TexShare, sign up for a TexShare card at your home library and bring it to any SAPL location to activate your new SAPL card for free.
  • More information about borrowing privileges with a TexShare card is available on the SAPL website.
  • Others may use the San Antonio Public Library for a fee.

Do I have to be over 18 to activate my card?

Any Bexar County resident can register a San Antonio Public Library card with a valid photo ID and proof of address. People less than 18 years of age can register for a card by presenting a photo ID or proof of address. Younger children without these documents can sign up when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with a valid photo ID and proof of address.

Can I give a library card as a gift?

Well aren't you generous! This promotion is available to anyone while supplies last. Visit your local SAPL location and ask for a giftable library card. You can gift up to five cards.


Already have a library card, but haven't seen it for awhile?

Don't worry! You can renew or replace your old card with your new limited-edition gift. If our staff can't locate your old account, they will happily register a new account using your new card.
