Genre Award Winners

   Every genre has awards given out to outstanding books of the genre. To find out more about the awards winners of the genres below, please visit the genre's subject guide: 

Fiction Award Winners

You've probably heard of some of these awards given to outstanding novels.

 

  • The Man Booker Prize -- Awarded annually to the best novel written by a citizen of the British Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Bellwether Prize for Fiction -- Founded by Barbara Kingsolver the award seeks to recognize literature that supports social change. 
  • Lambda Literary Awards -- The Lambda Literary Award seeks "to recognize excellence in the field of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender literature." Awarded annually the judges--writers, booksellers, librarians, and journalists--assess the entries in more than 20 categories.
  • National Book Awards -- The National Book Foundation's goal was to enhance the public's awareness of exceptional books written by fellow Americans, and to increase the popularity of reading in general. Today, the Awards are given annually to recognize achievements in four genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People's Literature.
  • Nobel Prize in Literature -- First awarded in 1901 to the French poet and philosopher Sully Prudhomme, who in his poetry showed the "rare combination of the qualities of both heart and intellect".
  • PEN-Faulkner Award -- The largest peer-juried award in the country this national prize honors the best published works of fiction by American citizens in a calendar year. One winner and four finalists are selected.
  • Pulitzer Prize for Fiction -- Established in 1917 the award recognizes distinguished works of fiction and nonfiction published in book form by an American author, preferably dealing with American life.
