Landa Gardens Conservancy

Mission

The Landa Gardens Conservancy is dedicated to raising funds to beautify and maintain the grounds at Landa Library so that the entire community can enjoy them!

History

1994 -- Group of neighbors, organized under the name of Landa Library Alliance, began raising money to build the playground Mr. Landa envisioned.

2001 -- The Monte Vista Historical Association, in conjunction with the Landa Library Alliance, formed the Landa Gardens Committee. Working in partnership with the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Public Library Bard, the Landa Gardens Committee created a master plan for the Landa Gardens.

2004 -- Landa Gardens Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was formed to raise the funds necessary to implement the plan and establish an endowment for perpetual maintenance of the grounds. More than $1.5 million was raised by the end of 2007.

Purpose

"To encourage the preservation of the distinctive heritage of the Monte Vista area; to keep the physical identity of this late nineteenth-early twentieth century district intact; and to educate the public, especially the youth, with knowledge of our inherited neighborhood values which contribute to a wholesome urban environment."

The Monte Vista National Historic District is located one and a half miles north of downtown San Antonio and is home to about 3,000 people in 100 city blocks. Its distinguished residential architecture, primarily from San Antonio's "Gilded Age," defined as extending from 1890 to 1930, forms the most extensive and intact neighborhood of this era in Texas.
