Meet: J.D. Robb

J. D. Robb is a pseudonym for Nora Roberts. The first futuristic suspense book, Naked in Death, was published in paperback in 1995.

While fans had their suspicions, it wasn’t until the twelfth book in the series, Betrayal in Death (2001), that the publisher fully revealed that J. D. Robb was a pseudonym for bestselling powerhouse Nora Roberts.

Harriet Martens mysteries by by H.R.F. Keating
While this series is set is England, rather than the near-future East Coast, the protagonists have the same general personality and tough cop demeanor as Robb's Eve. First in the series is The hard detective.

Start with The Hard Detective featuring Detective Chief Inspector Harriet Martens as she seeks a serial killer targeting constables of the Greater Birchester Police for the "eye for an eye" injunctions of Exodus 21:23.
Guild Hunter novels by by Nalini Singh
A strong fantasy element is present in the series rather than Robb's unobtrusive sci-fi element. But Singh has also created a strong female character with a tragic past that's revealed gradually during the series. And Singh has created strong secondary characters, some the heroine already has a close emotional relationship with and others that the readers, and the heroine, get to know during the series.

Start with the first book, Angels' blood. Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux is hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention. Instead of a vamp, her prey is another archangel. . .

Heartbreaker by Julie Garwood

Like Robb, Garwood writes well plotted stories with lots of time for witty dialog and deeply felt romantic attachments. The two authors also share the ability to craft strong secondary and repeating characters that readers love to follow.

Robb's Eve Dallas books are grittier than Garwood. Readers who enjoy Eve's reluctant tumble into love with Roarke will probably enjoy Garwood for the sense of unity between her characters. It is best to read Garwood's Romantic Suspense works in order as the secondary characters one meets in one book become lead characters in another. Start with Heartbreaker.

While waiting for test results to determine if he needs another round of chemotherapy, Father Thomas Madden sits in for another priest in the confessional. When a mocking voice seeks the good father's prayers to prevent him from murdering the priest's own sister, Laurant, panic quickly sets in. The faceless voice behind the screen admits to a previous murder and also knows about Father Tommy's cancer. Tommy quickly calls his best friend, FBI agent Nicholas Buchanan, and asks him to track down the madman and protect his sister. Laurant and Nick fake falling in love to flush out the murderer, but the pretense is short-lived. . .
Monkeewrench series by by P.J. Tracy

Tracy's series, especially the first Monkeewrench features an accelerating, unpredictable plot that combines police procedural with techno-geek-speak, an array of well-drawn characters and witty repartee. Similar to Eve Dallas the main character has major personal issues. The plot line featuring men is still developing.

Grace McBride and the oddball crew of her software company, Monkeewrench, create a computer game where the killer is always caught, where the good guys always win. But their game becomes a nightmare when someone starts duplicating the fictional murders in real life, down to the last detail. By the time the police realize what's happening, three people are dead, and with seventeen more murder scenarios available online, there are seventeen more potential victims. . .

Donovan Family books by Elizabeth Lowell
Lowell writes Romantic Adventure stories that often feature the same insider knowledge elements so strongly used by Brockmann and Robb.

Lowell's Donovan Family books consist of four novels about a family involved in the jewel trade. Each of the stories has some connection to the intelligence community and the games played in that world are the driving force in the books. While Pearl Cove, which tells the story of a game of political murder, a hunt for a killer, and the tactics of evasion, is the closes match to the intrigue of the SEAL books, the first book in the series is Amber beach.
Team Sixteen novels by by Suzanne Brockmann
Like Robb's books, Brockmann's possess a plot that is driven by events other than falling in love. And both series employ men with skills that are not typically found in Romances.

Brockmann writes in a realistic, sometimes graphic manner about both the SEALs and the love scenes. These fast paced character driven stories feature banter between the members of the teams, details of military life, tactics, and the maneuverings of the greater intelligence community, with humor underlying many of her stories.

The unsung hero is the first in the series. While recovering after a near-fatal head injury, navy SEAL lieutenant Tom Paoletti catches a glimpse of an international terrorist in his New England hometown. The navy dismisses the danger as injury-induced imaginings. In a desperate effort to prevent disaster, Tom creates his own makeshift counterterrorist team, assembling his most loyal officers, two elderly war veterans, a couple of misfit teenagers, and Dr. Kelly Ashton-the sweet "girl next door" who has grown into a remarkable woman. . .

Death on Demand, the first in the series, introduces readers to Annie, a mystery bookstore owner with a strong bent for detection, and her sleuthing partner soon-to-become-spouse Max Darling. The romantic relationship that develops between Annie and Max is played out through the series, at times taking center stage in the story.

The series also has its share of quirky, memorable secondary characters, each of whom contributes his or her own element of appeal to the books. Characters such as Max Darling's much-married mother Laurel, who soon becomes Annie's flighty mother-in-law, and Annie's most dedicated and opinionated customer Henny Brawley.
