What are zines?!?!?!Zines (pronounced ZEENS; like magaZINES or ZEEN singular) are independently published booklets allowing their creators, referred to as zinesters, to share many ideas and express themselves in ways that traditional mainstream publishing may not accept. The form stems from a history of self-published pamphlets, niche fan zines, underground comics, and the Riot Grrrl movement. There is a heavy emphasis on not waiting for someone else to do it for you but rather doing it yourself within this community. However, it is also a vibrant and supportive community. While zines are predominantly a physical media form, the internet/social media era has further empowered zinesters to share their works digitally as e-zines. Moreover, zines are a tool or mode of expression anyone can access. |

Monthly Zine ReviewThe Feast of St. Columba
What can all happen in one festival that has kite racing, magic, and a saintly procession? Quite a lot. The Feast of St. Columba divides the story into vignettes. Within each vignette, the characters are part of different situations that tie up with the overall plot of The St. Columba Festival. The character dialogue is pleasantly grounded and fun. If you want a comic-style storytelling, then this would be the zine for you.
