Read-along devices by manufacturers VOX and Wonderbook are now available for select children’s titles in the San Antonio Public Library collection. Read-alongs pair an audiobook player with print books to provide audio narration in an easy-to-use, accessible, all-in-one device.

The new read-alongs are directly attached to the printed book so no need for Wi-Fi or a mobile device. The books come with instructions in English and Spanish, and controls are simple enough that readers can start listening almost instantly. Borrow one from the read-along shelf in the children’s sections at any SAPL location to get started. The devices can be used with or without headphones and select titles are available in English and Spanish.

Read-alongs are books with audio narration built directly into a print book.

Read-alongs are as simple as pushing a button, and each device includes detailed instructions inside the book cover. Below are resources from the companies that make the read-alongs if you need help getting started:

How to use VOX Books

Each San Antonio Public Library location has about 75 children’s read-along titles.

The audio player is built directly into the print book meaning no Wi-Fi or internet access is necessary.

Headphones are not required to use a read along. The built-in device can be used with or without headphones. Library locations do not provide headphones.

Read-alongs provide children with an opportunity to independently read during early literacy development. Additionally, with titles available in English and Spanish, children learning how to read in either of these languages can have the added assistance of hearing words out loud even if they or their parents aren’t native speakers of that language.

Read-alongs will be fully charged when you check them out and can be played many times before needing to be charged again. The Library does not provide chargers with read-alongs.

Read-alongs are subject to the same policies as other items in the Library collection. Holds and renewals are allowed if the item is not on hold for someone else.

You can check out read-alongs at any San Antonio Public Library location by visiting the read-along shelf in the children’s area. You can also search our catalog to find read-along titles available in our collection. Read-alongs are listed in the catalog as “juvenile read-along" or “book plus audio.” See the examples below.
