The Narco Western is a type of Contemporary Western that focuses on Narco culture and drug trafficking. In these narratives, the antagonists are usually Mexican cartels. However, it is possible for cartel members to be featured as antiheroes or villain protagonists, too. These Westerns can be set either within Mexico or along/near the Mexican-American border. They may take place during or after when the Mexican cartels were first established during the second half of the twentieth century.
