The Urban Western is a subgenre that defies most conventions of the traditional Western. These narratives take place in, as the name implies, heavily populated city environments. Although this contrasts with the visual aesthetic that the genre is known for, the setting is still one of isolation and crime running rampant. Protagonists here are typically nonconformists who live against the status quo. This means they can be antiheroes whose methods don't cooperate with the law, vigilantes who take the law into their own hands, or perhaps a classic Western stock character from the American Southwest is planted into an urban environment.
