The Northern Western, or “Northwestern" for short and "Northern" even shorter, is a Western that takes place in either the Canadian wilderness or the northernmost regions of the United States. The northern arctic locations mirror the inhospitableness of the desert in the American Southwest. Both share extreme temperatures, isolated locales, and dangerous wildlife. These Westerns sometimes replace the American lawmen and sheriffs with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or “Mounties” for short. The same characters and themes found in classic Westerns can still be found in these narratives.
